The Magnolia Speech School Success Stories
“Like many Magnolia parents, we experienced heartbreaking emotions and the loss of dreams when we learned that our daughter, Kelsey, was deaf. We feared she would never experience the joy of sound or conversation or the beauty of music. From Kelsey's first day there, Magnolia Speech School helped us work through our grief and conquer these fears as we saw the dedication of their committed, creative staff helping our child learn to listen. We watched with amazement as they supported Kelsey's growth and helped her turn what she hears into the language of our lives. Today, with Magnolia's help, our house rings with precious sounds--Kelsey's constant conversation, her infectious laughter, and, perhaps the sweetest to me, Kelsey's beautiful music.”

“Our family moved to Jackson from Ocean Springs so our son, Will, could attend Magnolia Speech School. Over the past 18 months, his transformation has been remarkable. He has gone from a self- conscience, 3 year old who did not speak at all, to a confident, articulate child. We will forever be grateful to Magnolia for changing the course of Will's life.”

“My name is Susan Salter and I was born profoundly deaf. My education began at Magnolia Speech School when I was 18 months old and I was mainstreamed into public schools when I was 5 years old. I graduated with honors from Brandon High School and attended Mississippi State University for 2 years. I then enrolled in the Health Information Management program at the University of Mississippi
Medical Center. I graduated in May 2001 and am employed by St. Dominic Health System as a Compliance Technician. What an exciting time my life has been and I know it all began at Magnolia Speech School. I am now married and the mother of a 19 month old son. Cole was born with a congenital heart defect and has had several heart surgeries. He also has a hearing loss. Cole is now enrolled at Magnolia Speech School. I am so excited and confident his needs are being to be met because of the loving and caring faculty at Magnolia Speech School.”

“As a mother, it was distressing to me when I learned that all three of my children were born without the natural ability to learn language like “normal” children do. As a pediatrician it was equally frustrating to discover just how little was known in the medical community about recognizing, diagnosing, and treating children who had no language skills. By the grace of God, I learned about Magnolia Speech School. All three of my children enrolled and attended for two and a half years. Skip began at four and a half, Will at three and Katie at three. From Magnolia all of them mainstreamed into regular educational settings and have achieved with excellence. The depth of my family's gratitude to Magnolia cannot possibly be measured.”

“Our son, Andrew, was diagnosed with Apraxia when he was just over 3 years old. He could only speak one word clearly and a couple of sounds. The doctors informed us that he may never speak. We were devastated. Even at his young age, Andrew was already able to spell, read, count and use sign language. We simply would not accept that a child with so much potential would be unable to communicate in a verbal world. After visiting several speech pathologists and countless hours of unsuccessful speech therapy, we were beginning to lose hope. Although we lived in New Jersey, we were lucky enough to hear about Magnolia Speech School. After only two years at Magnolia, Andrew was speaking at an age appropriate level. The change in him was amazing. His frustration with being unable to speak is long forgotten. He is making friends, telling jokes, expressing his feelings, and most importantly, being a talkative little boy. Andrew just completed 1 st grade in a mainstream private school in New Jersey. He is reading at the 3 rd grade level and excelling in all aspects of learning. He proudly raises his hand to answer a question, and loves to relate detailed stories to his friends and teachers. Andrew would have never gotten to this point with Magnolia Speech School. The school gave our son his life back by giving him the gift of speech.”

“Magnolia Speech School will always be a special part of our lives. At 18 months old Stephen had no verbal language. He attended Magnolia for 4 years and began first grade in a public school with no special education. He now talks as pretty as any hearing child and is also excelling in school with leaps and bounds. He has been on the A/B Honor Roll the entire two years he has been in public school, and is also a part of the program for Gifted Children due to his above average scoring on his state test. The teachers and staff at Magnolia are above exceptional and I thank God for them and this school daily. Magnolia gave my son a voice and that is something I will cherish forever.”

My Magnolia Blossom
“There are no words I could truly say,
To describe the emotions I feel today.
Four long years have passed us by,
Our day has come to say goodbye.
Magnolia, I gave my tiny seed to you,
You cared for and nurtured her as she grew.
Now I must pick my flower from your tree,
Thanking you for helping my child succeed.
A beautiful flower she has grown to be,
My Magnolia blossom that has grown from this tiny seed.”
“Being at Magnolia Speech School has been a great learning experience fro my daughter and me. It gave me the opportunity to meet and fall in love with the most precious children in the world. For my daughter Cori, being at Magnolia has given her the start she needs to succeed in the hearing world. We traveled over 200 miles daily for 4 years so Cori could attend Magnolia and it was worth every mile. I am grateful to all the staff and the support system Magnolia provided to us. Cori will mainstream into first grade in our local school system this fall!”
